doug mentioned, while senators graham, ayotte and mccain are focused on what susan rice, ambassador rice said on the sunday talk shows, they are not asking any questions at all about the real questions about security there at the consulate in benghazi. that's where their interest and focus and ire should be pointed. not at a u.n. ambassador who went on the sunday talk shows as a spokesperson for the administration giving, imparting the information she was given by the intelligence community. >> and susan, for those just joining us. this happened moments ago in the last hour. i want to remind everyone what the three senators had to say. take a look. >> we are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get. >> bottom line, i'm more disturbed now than i was before that the 16 september explanation about how four americans died in benghazi, libya, by ambassador rice, i think, does not do justice to the reality at the time. >> clearly the impression that was given, the information given to the american people was wrong, in fact, ambassador rice said

them. >> she did make a statement about that. in addition to senator mccain, senator lindsey graham as well they have both been outspoken critic of what happened. not only is there a coverup but they would oppose susan rice's nomination to secretary of state. listen to what she said directly to john mccain. >> i have great respect for senator mccain and his service to our country. i always have. and i always will. i do think that some of the statements he's made about me have been unfounded but i look forward to having the opportunity at the appropriate time to discuss all of this with him. >> that's a measured and appropriate way to respond, very respectful. but let's put yourself in john mccain's shoes. do you call for a meeting with susan rice or something public, congressional hearings? how do you see this playing out? >> i think that joe should write john mccain's talking points because he sounds more measured and moderate in response. what susan rice did was defend herself, reiterate what we've been saying throughout the process, which is she was working off talking points, the d

lindsey graham are going to take this fight if she is nominated to replace hillary clinton. >> well, no. i mean, there's a clear question that's at stake. she was in a position of turning for t interpreting for the american public a major foreign affairs event. there are a lot of questions around that and what senator mccain and graham are focusing on is we need a lot of those questions answered before they can move forward. she's going to have to deal with that. having said that, it is not personal. it is how did she perform in terms of her role in terms of presenting that information to the american public. >> but david she has said, and others have backed it up, that she was given limited information. she was given that which was not classified. those were the talking points, that's why she was sent out. >> and if that's the case, then everything is fine, but i think that has not been proven. congressional investigations are occurring in fact looking into the intelligence. look, if she simply laid out what she had been given in terms of intelligence, then that's not her fault. if she

opposition to norquist's pledge, chambliss, the republican from georgia and lindsey graham, the republican from being is is being could see primary challenges this year. lindsey graham is a constant target of more conservative elements within the republican party and already seen stories about some members of congress contemplating running against chambliss in that primary. that's the big threat here. americans for tax reform spent big money this year on house races around the country and on independent expenditures. who is to say we won't see the same kind of expenditures in republican primaries coming up in 2014 and by the way to karen's point about the administration trying to use their database, their supporters to actually turn out and vote, that's the biggest challenge for the democratic party moving forward. how do you take this organization that's centered around one particular guy, president obama, and expand that to the entire democratic party as a whole? both parties are going through a real metamorphosis. it will be fascinating to watch over the next two, four, six y

doing with ayotte and graham and mccain coming out to talk about the fact that they're meeting with ambassador rice leaves them scratching their heads and with more questions? of course people want more answers to what happened in benghazi, but it's not up to ambassador rice. she's not fronting the investigation. >> no, but she's been part of that team that went on those sunday shows to talk act those issues to say it was a video that caused this. whether it was the talking points or the intelligence, she's the one in front of the tv cameras that said this. this is an audition to be the country's top diplomat. she's going into a hostile group, we would want her to have a better relationship after, not worse. she had three senators she knew she wasn't in a great relationship with. they seemed to be more open to her over the weekend. she went into a meeting and made it worse. regardless of what you think about susan rice -- >> were they really going to listen to her and come out and be, like, oh, god, we love susan rice now? i don't think that was ever going to be the backside of that

ahead based on what we've heard from senator collins, ayotte, graham, mccain and the like? >> undoubtedly yes, but i think it's totally unfair -- let me be very clear. i'm on the intelligence committee. what ambassador rice did is precisely what she should have done. she used the approved talking points from the intelligence community that were unclassified. she did not use classified information and that's precisely what she should do. she shouldn't use classified information. she is required in her position to use unclassified information. and that's precisely what she did. information provided to her unanimously by the intelligence community. to go after susan rice is totally and completely unfair. and those who are doing it repeatedly ought to back off. that is not where fault lies. >> senator conrad, great to have you with me. here to talk over some of the issues, ed schultz. ed, great to have you here. a lot to get into this morning as we talk about the fiscal cliff. erskine bowles says he thinks democrats and republicans are serious about getting a deal done, but wh

. provides annually to the government, most recently senator lind cie graham on "meet the press" over the weekend, saying we're watching you. secretary clinton in cairo keeping contact with president morsi, what are republicans in washington looking for as our two governments are trying to resolve this together? >> well, we're looking for balance, of course, and looking for our government for secretary clinton to represent our best interests in these negotiations. obviously, everybody wants to see peace in the middle east. and now we have the challenge of dealing with fairly awe and untested -- not regimes but new administrations. and so there's a lot of uncertainty in that part of the world, a lot of urn certainty with regards to whether or not there will be peace. we, of course, our prayers are with the families that lost loved ones in these terrorist attacks, and we're praying for peace in that part of the world. but clearly we want the u.s. to stand strong and want secretary clinton to be successful in negotiations. >> we did play that sound earlier from secretary clinton co

republican strategist boris epstein. richard, i'll begin with you, richard graham has been a hard critic of president obama. they are now hailing the cease-fire deal. they released a statement yesterday praising prime minister benjamin netanyahu for reaching the truce. however, did you notice no mention of president obama or secretary clinton? what do you make of that? >> honestly, that statement was sad and pathetic they cannot take off the partisan blinders at a time like this. and i think what it does is it hurts their credibility going forward in the international stage. they were ones very much on susan rice's back about benghazi and the possibility of her being secretary of state. but they have showed themselves being totally incapable of displaying any objectivity. for them to be praising the muslim brotherhood and palestinians but not their own president and secretary of state who clearly and unmistakably had a big role in bringing this bombing campaign by hamas to an end. that is really not right. and the contrast frankly is what governor christie in new jersey did, presi
